The following members of the Waco Fire Department have made the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty, protecting the lives and property of our City.
Waco Fireman's Memorial, Oakwood Cemetery
April 30, 1925 Fireman N.H. Kendrick, Engine Co. 1 Age: 25
After arriving to a structure fire at the rear of 507 S. 5th Street, Fireman Kendrick prepared to depart the running board of the apparatus. Unfortunately before he could do so, Engine Co. 4 skidded on wet pavement and collided with Engine Co. 1, crushing Fireman Kendrick between the apparatus. Three other firefighters were also injured in the incident. However, Fireman Kendrick died at the hospital approximately 5 hours later.
Captain Robert D. (Bob) Brandon
March 23, 1960 Captain Robert D. (Bob) Brandon, Unit 2 Age: 56
While acting as Assistant Chief, Captain Brandon collapsed of an apparent heart attack while operating at the scene of a house fire at 2620 Alexander Avenue. After one trip up a ground ladder to inspect the attic area which was still issuing heat and smoke, he descended the ladder to catch a breath of fresh air. Brandon collapsed off of the ladder while making a second climb for further inspection.
Fireman Jimmy Fox
April 7, 1969 Fireman Jimmy Fox, Engine Co. 5 Age: 21
Just two days after completing his 6-month probationary period, while operating at a smoldering sawdust silo at 2420 Jackson Avenue, a collapse occurred burying Fox and another fireman. Despite the efforts of other firefighters in digging the men out, Fireman Fox died from apparent suffocation.
